Five ways to win candidates in a competitive market
18 Sept 2026 · 4 min read
When the best candidates hold multiple offers, process speed and clarity matter as much as salary.
For specialist roles in Hong Kong, the strongest candidates are rarely on the market for long. Employers who move decisively, and communicate clearly, consistently secure better hires.
1. Agree the brief before you start
Align hiring managers and HR on the must-haves, the nice-to-haves and the budget before the role goes live. Changing the brief mid-process is the most common reason searches stall.
2. Compress the interview process
Two or three stages, scheduled within a fortnight, is achievable for most roles. Each extra week increases the chance your preferred candidate accepts elsewhere.
3. Sell the opportunity, not just the job
Candidates want to know why the role exists, what success looks like in the first year and how they will grow. Make sure every interviewer can answer those questions consistently.
4. Give feedback quickly
Same-day or next-day feedback keeps candidates engaged and signals that you value their time, even when the answer is no.
5. Make a complete offer the first time
Benchmark the package properly up front. A first offer that needs to be revised costs time and goodwill, and invites a counter-offer from the candidate's current employer.
